Magnetic Box
Magnetic gift boxes that close flush on 2–4 hidden magnets, giving the opening a deliberate, expensive feel. Built for gift sets and corporate gifting, with pull ribbons and EVA trays available.
How a magnetic box works
A magnetic box — a magnetic flip-lid box — is a rigid board box whose lid is attached to the base by a paper hinge, with thin disc magnets set beneath the paper at the lid edge and the base edge. On closing, the magnets pull to each other and the lid seats in one motion, with nothing visible from the outside.
Because it opens one-handed and the lid never separates from the base, it has become the default construction for filmed unboxing and for PR and influencer kit work.
Magnet count against box size
More magnets is not better — the count has to match the lid size and the weight of the contents.
- Small boxes — two magnets at the front lid edge is enough.
- Medium to large — four, spread to the corners, so the lid does not bow in the middle and gap.
- Very wide lids — an extra centre point, because a long paper lid flexes in the middle.
Magnets that are too strong become a problem of their own: the lid snaps open with a jolt that shakes the box, which ruins the moment on camera. We pick a pull strong enough to seat cleanly but soft to open, and let you feel it on a real mock-up first.
Why magnetic costs more than lid-and-base
The extra cost comes from three places: the magnets themselves, the labour of setting them in register on both sides, and the hinge structure, which needs several folded paper layers to survive repeated opening.
If cost per box is the binding constraint and one-handed opening is not required, a lid-and-base box gives the same strength and finish quality for less.
Where magnetic boxes earn their price
- PR boxes and influencer campaigns — one-handed open, lid holds in frame, closes again for a second take.
- Executive corporate gifts — the sound and motion of the close communicate care without mentioning price.
- Products whose box gets kept — jewelry, watches, pens, because the lid never goes missing.
- Multi-piece sets — a lid that folds open reveals the whole layout in a single view.
Finishing that works here
Because the lid folds open into a flat panel, the inside of the lid is the most overlooked valuable surface on the box. We suggest using it:
- Print a message or artwork inside the lid, seen only on opening — a surprise that works harder than exterior artwork.
- Add a slot for a product or thank-you card on the lid.
- Foil stamp the logo on the outer lid, over a dark ground for high contrast.
Inside the base, an EVA or paper tray insert stops the product shifting in transit — critical for a box that will be filmed, since contents collapsed into one corner ruin the whole shot.
Ordering
Send the product dimensions and quantity. We will propose magnet count, board thickness, and an insert matched to the product weight, and produce a real mock-up to open and close before the full run. Flexible MOQ — small campaigns start in the dozens and scale to 50,000+ pieces, with 10–15 day production.
